Trotwood Rams’ guards steal show from Jefferson star center

“DaWuan, in my opinion, is the best guard in this area and one of the best in the state,” Baker said.

With Trotwood (12-3), though, the battle is often about which Rams guard is the best that night. Tubbs started fast with 13 points in the first quarter while Thomas struggled. Then Thomas finished with 17 second-half points with a mix of 3-pointers, drives and free throws.

“I feel like we’re clicking, and this is the right time to be clicking,” Thomas said. “Usually at least one of us is going to have a good game.”

Payne scored just two first-half points and finished with 11 as Trotwood guarded him the way many opponents do, ganging up in the middle and limiting his touches.

“I thought he did a good job of passing out of it,” said Jefferson coach Art Winston. “He just needs to learn how to make the most of it.”

Trotwood led 20-6 in the game’s first five minutes and took a 39-23 halftime advantage. Jefferson cut the lead to 43-35 with 4:53 left in the third quarter, but Thomas and Tubbs combined for 17 of Trotwood’s 19 fourth-quarter points to help the Rams pull away.

Junior Joby Jackson led Jefferson (12-4) with 14 points.
