Mason edges Trotwood with clutch final surge at track meet

“I hate to sound corny about it, but I’m proud of the conference for what we’ve done,” said Lebanon sprinter Chase Cochran.

Cincinnati Walnut Hills edged rival Withrow to win the girls team title 63-59. The top four in each event advanced to next week’s state meet in Columbus.

Like he did at district, Henry swept the wind-aided 100 meters (10.45), the 400 (47.31) and 200 (21.33). Teammate Julius Ruby was third in the 200, allowing T-M to overtake Wayne for the lead, 62-60.

The only problem was Mason answered by placing 1-3 in the 3,200. Up by three points going into the meet-ending 1,600 relay, Mason had to place next to T-M to secure the title. As expected, favored Trotwood won the race (3:17.07) and Mason was second for its one-point team victory.

“We told our guys that we had to get second (in the final relay),” Mason coach Chip Dobson said.

“There was no other choice. They stepped up.”

Still, Trotwood is in great position to contend for a team title at state, having also advanced two other relays and long jumper Dorian Davis. “We qualified everywhere that we wanted to,” Trotwood coach Randy Waggoner said.

• Wayne senior sprinter Demoye Bogle became the first Warrior to qualify to state in four individual events, sweeping the hurdles, placing second in the 100 and fourth in the 200.

• Centerville’s Michael Bennett added a shot put win (57 feet, 11½ inches) to the discus record (196-3) he set on Wednesday.

• Other area boys individual winners were Carroll’s Chad Kiggins in the 1,600 (4:21.92) and Piqua’s Kurt Grove in the 800 (1:56.12).

• Lebanon, anchored by Cochran, set a state best in the 400 relay (41.86). Cochran also advanced in the 100 and 200 and anchored the third-place 1,600 relay.

• Lebanon’s Maria Rotello (100 hurdles) and Carly Hamilton of Springboro (1,600) were the only area girls to win Friday.
